Synopsis
Rampher, a young man from Kampur Sareya, leaves his village home—marked by a broken table and his late farmer father’s photograph—to escape debt and support his mother and sister, Lakshmi. Lured by his uncle Lallan Paswan’s promise of work, he arrives in Delhi with dreams of stability. Employed in a metal polishing company, Rampher soon faces the harsh realities of urban labor: unpaid wages, illegal night shifts, and dehumanizing conditions. His hope turns to resistance as he joins fellow workers in protests against the company, demanding fair pay and safety, only to be met with indifference and police brutality. As his situation worsens—jobless, evicted, and starving—Rampher’s moral resolve crumbles. Driven by hunger, he steals rice, a desperate act that leads to a brutal mob beating. He dies clutching grains, a tragic symbol of his unfulfilled struggle, collapsing in the arms of a suited figure who guides him to narrate his story in the afterlife. Parallel narratives, like an old man at a graveyard and lockdown visuals, frame his tale within the broader migrant crisis, amplified by songs and poems of labor and loss.
