Self Portrait offers an insight into a middle class family's tribulations in finding respectability and acceptance in the eyes of their immediate society amidst a never ending struggle for survival. The quagmire of conformity engulfs any stray aspirations of individuals to break free from their shackles. The playwright, through a poet's vision, stresses the extremely vulnerable position of women and the minority community in Indian society.
